Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: GO TO IT!

Today is Friday morning. You have possibilities: Tonight, April 10 at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 11 at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday, April 12 at 3 p.m. This will be a brief review article so that you can get your tickets NOW. Do not miss it. The dancers are energy in human form. Their dancing is excellent. It will lift you up. It will give you dance. They dance at Zellerbach Hall, Bancroft, UC, Berkeley.

I met the Alvin Ailey company at the American Dance Festival. The classes were challenging and I loved that. The dancer/teachers taught me two dances from the repertory. There was nothing like it. When I went to school in California, I yearned for those dances. In the dressing room of a large studio, the students were critical of the Ailey company’s students. They said they kicked too high. Jumped too big. I did not come back. I made my dances and was toured by the US State Department and host countries. Seeing this company – all the dancers were new to me and the choreography, except Revelations, was new to me, too. When you go to Zellerbach Hall, you will see dances that will premiere in the Bay Area on this tour. There are two dances which will appear in new productions: A Case of You, premiered in 2004, now in a new 2025 production, it was choreographed by Judith Jamison. The dance Grace, premiered in 1999, the new production premiered in 2024. The choreographer is Ronald K. Brown.

When I was very young, I read an article in Time Magazine about Alvin Ailey’s company performing in Europe. Some writer talked with him. Alvin said that they cannot exist in the USA. No one pays enough to keep them going even though they were entranced by the dancers and the dances. He could not tour here, not then. Now they receive wonderful support and have a roster of fabulous dancers. DO NOT MISS IT. This is the short review of an art that is lasting long. GO TO IT!
